“Movember” – Relate Counselling Support

“Movember” – Relate Counselling Support

Local Barbers from across Belfast and North Down will today be tackling the fall out (excuse the pun) of Movember, with men coming in to get their ‘Mo’s’ removed after a month of growing and grooming them to raise awareness of men’s health, including mental health and wellbeing.

Relate NI are using this increase in custom to further raise awareness of men’s mental health in barbershops, and to highlight the counselling services available free under the “Together For You” project, funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

Garry Jackson proprietor for Garry’s Barber Shop said, “The Barber Shop is very much the last male bastion. It’s a place where men, Dads and Granddads come. It’s an environment men have always felt very comfortable in and from an early age boys can observe how men interact with each other. At Garry’s Barber Shop, High St, Holywood, we are delighted to support the Relate NI counselling initiative. Over the past 25 years our shop has served three generations of male customers and we are well aware of some of the difficult issues we have to cope with in our daily lives. If even one of our customers can gain access to counselling support then it’s been an extremely worthwhile cause”.

Relate’s counselling service supports individuals, parents, carers and families where there may be a complexity of issues, including alcohol and drugs misuse, mental health problems like depression or anxiety, joblessness, domestic abuse and family relationship issues.

Peter Topping, Project Co-ordinator for Relate NI said, “Four out of ten men will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime. Our free therapeutic counselling will help provide a safe, secure and supportive environment to improve your personal and family relationships, irrelevant of the issues. We particularly want to encourage men to access this service, which is why we are targeting barbers to help us get our information out to their customers. I want to thank those involved again for hosting information leaflets and posters on the services available.”

Relate NI are hosting a FREE mental health awareness session for the owners and staff of barbers on 10 December 2014. For more information on this event, or on the counselling services available please contact Peter Topping on 028 9032 3454 or email TFY@relateni.org. Alternatively visit www.togetherforyou.org.uk for more information on the services available.
