Every year on December 5th, organizations and individuals around the world take part in International Volunteer Day which celebrates the contributions made by volunteers towards development in their communities.
This year especially, the work of volunteers has been paramount in the community response towards the Covid-19 pandemic and we commend everybody who stepped up to help those most vulnerable in their communities.
The relationships and connections we make with people through volunteering means that giving back not only helps others; it gives us a sense of belonging, makes us feel better about ourselves and improves our own wellbeing.
People who have a network of people to get involved in meaningful activities with are also more likely to be healthy and happy.
Some of the other benefits to volunteering include;
· Opportunity to foster meaningful relationships
· Improved confidence
· Encouraging socialising and preventing loneliness and isolation
· Providing opportunities to have fun
· Improved physical and mental health
· The opportunity to share existing skills and learn new ones
· Increased social interaction with people from different age groups
· Improved life satisfaction
Volunteer Now has launched their annual ChristmasTIME campaign appealing to people to consider volunteering their time to #HelpEachOther
There are many organisations which have safely restarted their volunteer services and requests for help are likely to continue, some in the same ways or perhaps in new ways.
To find an opportunity to foster meaningful relationships through volunteering, use the ‘volunteer search’ on the Volunteer Now homepage or check out their ChristmasTIME activities.« The New ‘Relationship’ Normal Relate NI urging people to ‘Relieve the Pressure’ this Christmas following relationships survey results »

“I found the Relationship MOT an excellent method of focusing on we work as a couple and just as importantly, where we need to work. It was professional, insightful and well worth the time. It has reminded us of how much we have to be proud of in our relationship and why it is so important to occasionally review it with experts.”Service Attended Relationship MOT
“I would definitely recommend using the Relationship MOT service as a bit of a check in with your partner. I thought how the counsellor was able to steer the conversation was very insightful and nuanced. The MOT reminded us about why we are great together but also the importance of communication and respect.” “Our counsellor provided an outside perspective which immediately helped us to agree that we needed to stop and think with more kindness and empathy for each other especially when stressed or pissed off. We both felt that our counsellor’s excellent and gentle facilitation was quite invigorating. So many positives!”Service Attended Relationship MOT 2
