Menopause & Relationships

Menopause & Relationships

In all relationships, and even the healthiest of relationships, there are times when couples face challenges. The Menopause can be a time when couples face difficulties- there are many couples that don’t openly discuss menopause and this can cause difficulties in our relationships.

Women face many changes to their bodies, feelings & emotions during Menopause. Menopause is a completely natural part of life when hormones are changing, but many women can find this difficult or confusing. Experiences of Menopause are different for every woman. Women face a multitude of symptoms including loss of sex drive, hot flushes, brain fog, difficulty sleeping and weight gain, for example. This can be a very anxious and uncomfortable time for women. However, with good communication and understanding, couples can respond to the effects of menopausal symptoms and changing sexual desires.

How Does Menopause Affect Our Relationships?

How can partners best respond to the difficulties which confront women at this stage of their lives?

  • Be patient. Lots of women struggle with self- confidence during menopause and if this is coupled with fatigue, it’s likely that your partner may just want to snuggle up on the sofa, rather than go out for dinner or shopping.
  • Educate yourself. What can you learn to know what your partner is experiencing? Although you may not be able to fully understand what they are going through, moral support and understanding can go a long way. Lots of women feel lost during menopause, and your love and support can really help them.
  • Sex can be complicated during Menopause. It’s important that you talk to each other to discuss options for physical intimacy that are comfortable.
  • Show your partner that you love them. Menopause can cause changes in women’s bodies and appearance such as hair thinning. It’s not surprising that these changes can sometimes make your partner feel self- conscious. Reassurance is key in showing support for your partner, and sometimes they may just need a big hug.
